Thank you for visiting Sunfish Dreamworld, otherwise known as my personal website that I've been working on throughout the years. I've combined a lot of my pre-existing skills to put this site together and use it to show off my own creations and interests, much like many other spaces in the smallweb sphere. I first started learning to code in early 2022, but I didn't make much progress or have a noteable presence on Neocities until the beginning of 2024. Since then, I've replaced most of my social media usage with maintaining this site and keeping my circles small. I try to upload things here when I can, so feel free stop by every now and then!

For anyone with any questions, comments, concerns, or just wants to reach out, you can send me an email or message me elsewhere. I'm also open to chatting with people that have similar interests to me and think we'd get along, but please be at least 18! I also have a guestbook for anonymous and public comments.

You're most definitely wondering how I came up with a username as creative as Sunfish Dreamworld. I only first started using it near the end of summer in 2022, so it's strange to think about how I've only had it for a few years. At least, compared to the previous one that I had for nearly a decade and had seperated myself from.

I've always been a fan of horror, but in 2022, I was really into liminal spaces (especially ones with aquatic themes) because there was something about this subgenre of horror that I found intriguing... I've also been a fan of weird usernames I've come across and strange unfiction series on YouTube.

In 2020, I watched a video that featured this girl. You've might have seen her before since she was really popular in 2024 (for some reason). I was immediately captivated by her off-putting face, and the website that she's from is even more bizarre. The name of it stuck with me too... イルカの夢でさようなら, or "Goodbye in the Dream of a Dolphin"... I thought that this was some crazy ARG/unfiction story, but I later found out that she's just a avatar/mascot for a musical artist. I wish I never came across this information because I miss how mysterious she was...

I didn't go with the sea creature motif just because of Iruka— I've loved a lot of things related to the ocean ever since I was little. There were a lot of sea creatures that I really liked, and I learned more about them through Animal Crossing: City Folk. I never knew that sunfish existed until I caught one in that game for the first time, and I've been obsessed with them since then! I love how they look in the game, and it wasn't until later when I found out just how huge they actually are.

I tried to create my username by combining "sunfish" with dream-like/horror-like words and numbers until I came up with what I have now. I actually thought that Sunfish Dreamworld was too good of a name and had considered using it for my own story that I've been working on instead, but the longer I kept it as my handle, the more attached I got to it. And I also couldn't think of a better replacement...

Questions from this prompt list.

  • angel; have you ever been in love?
  • Yes, although I now reserve my heart for fictional characters.

  • petal; favorite novel and author?
  • I've been enjoying the Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official's Blessing) novels by Mò Xiāng Tóng Xiù, though my favorite author is (or was) Banana Yoshimoto because the way she writes sometimes reminds me of how my thought process works (that being a bit unnatural). If I include mangaka, Natsuki Takaya is especially a recent favorite of mine. I've been showing off a lot of her side notes from Furuba to my friends, and I'm honored that they compare my writing style and personality to hers.

  • honey perfume; favorite perfume/scent?
  • I have lotion from Vaseline of a lavender scent that I find nostalgic. It reminds me of some sort of lotion or powder that a relative used. I've also been using "A Thousand Wishes" perfume from Bath & Bodyworks that I really like.

  • sweet pea; what's your zodiac?
  • I'm a Pisces, but I never bothered to remember my other signs. As for Chinese zodiacs, I share mine with Ritsu from Fruits Basket.

  • softie; talk about your sexuality.

  • sugarplum; what's the color of your eyes and hair?
  • Hazel eyes + "dark chocolate" hair.

  • wings; coffee or tea?
  • I became a tea fan earlier this year, but I usually don't have it if I can't add sugar to it. My favorites are probably oolong and chamomile. Coffee has always tasted gross to me, and when I drink it every now and then, I always end up crashing and burning.

  • fairytale; are you a cat or dog person?
  • I'm definitely more of a cat person, but I don't mind most dogs. They're just really loud and sometimes overwhelming.

  • feather; which mythical creature would you transform into if you could?
  • Unicorns are probably more fitting for me, but I also like kitsune (mostly because of human-kitsune hybrids in anime).

  • snowflake; favorite time period?
  • I can't think of one right now, though I just enjoy listening to others talk about their favorites. Besides the Industrial Revolution and everything afterwards. Snooooore.

  • nymph; name 3 films that have changed your life and have shaped you into the person you are today.
  • I wouldn't say any movies changed my life or anything because that's kind of dramatic. I appreciate a few of them though, like how Yobi the Five Tailed Fox was what led me to getting really into anime.

  • vanilla; do you believe in ghosts?
  • No, though I don't mind if others do.

  • delicate; diamonds or pearls?
  • I think I like pearls more. They remind me of the dress that Tsukimi makes in Princess Jellyfish.

  • lavender dream; favorite album?
  • I'm not really an album person. I just listen to one or two songs from a given artist and rarely go out of my way to listen to more of their works. Kikuo has a lot of good albums, though...

  • silky; what's your biggest dream?
  • It probably isn't a surprise, but I would love to travel to Japan one day, maybe with a friend who is just as geeky as me. I'm nowhere near close to achieving that, but it's called a dream for a reason!

  • strawberry kiss: do you have a crush right now?
  • My heart belongs to bishies and bishies only. Especially this one.
  • I forget where I got these prompts from, but I'll be sure to find it for my next site update. I also didn't get around to all of the questions since I already had been writing a lot. I'll finish the other questions when I can!

  • If someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?
  • Read: I have a pick for a novel and a manga since I couldn't limit it to just one style of literature. Although it's tempting to go with Heaven Official's Blessing, that's a beast of a series... ^.^; So I would pick "The Lake" by Banana Yoshimoto as my novel that aligns with my interests and experiences. I've read a couple of other Yoshimoto's works, but her writing style and storytelling in this one really stuck with me. I resonated a lot with Chihiro (the main character) for a few reasons, mostly because her thought process is eerily similar to mine. She becomes emotionally detached in a lot of situations, which I thought made a really compelling contrast to Nakajima's deep need for closeness. I consider it a quick and easy read, though the challenge might come more from the themes of the book.

  • As for manga, "My Solo Exchange Diary" meant a lot to me when I first read it, and I really want to revisit it sometime soon... I had read "My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness" a few years ago and didn't know about its "sequel". I related to Nagata Kabi more than I thought was even possible, and I think that the manga/comic format really lends itself to portraying her experiences as a young adult who has no idea what she's doing. I hope I can make a manga like her someday...

  • Watch: I don't think I have a strong go-to for what someone should watch, but the Devilman OVAs... I love the English dub for the Devilman OVAs so much, it's a short and fun watch (fun in the "what the hell is happening" way), and I have a deep appreciation for these OVAs existing (even if they couldn't adapt the entire story). I wonder if anyone would be surprised that I'm into something as graphic and crazy as Devilman. I embarrassingly watch a lot of YouTube, which mostly consists of various let's plays and reaction videos.

  • Listen to: I always have a hard time describing my tastes in music ^.^;, but if I had to at least pick a genre that best reflects me, then it would be electro J-pop. (Perfume, Capsule, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Coltemonikha, etc.). I've recently been obsessed with Communication by Coltemonikha.

  • Have you ever found a writer who thinks just like you? If so, who?
  • Natsuki Takaya - I haven't finished Fruits Basket yet (I'm not even close), but my favorite parts from the manga come from Takaya's columns at the start of each volume. One of my favorite quotes from her: "I'm a real girly-girl at heart, so I would have liked to try wearing flowy dresses or maid outfits at least once, but it looks like that dream will go unfilled (laugh). Too bad."

  • Nagata Kabi - I mentioned her in my previous answer (see above). Reading "My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness" and especially "My Solo Exchange Diary" was like I was staring into a mirror, which was a little frightening! I admittedly don't remember much of Solo Exchange Diary since I read it so quickly, but there are a few parts of her describing things that really stuck with me.

  • Banana Yoshimoto - Also mentioned in my previous answer (see above). I'm not sure what she's like as a person, but as a writer, she's such an inspiration to me. Her stories probably seem simple from their unassuming synopses, but there's something about her prose that would catch me so off guard because of how similarly structured they are to how I form my thoughts. If I could ever own a copy of "Kitchen" and "The Lake", I'll definitely have to go back to find some examples.

  • List your fandoms and one character from each that you identify with.
  • Now that I think about it, I'm not really into any fandoms right now, and that's probably because I've just been distracted by other things. I've been reading and "rereading" all of the Heaven Official's Blessing (TGCF) novels for the past couple of months. The more I read, the more I find myself enjoying Xie Lian as a character + I relate to him in a lot of ways. I plan on writing a whole character analysis for him someday because I'm really drawn into his "unassuming" personality that hides how complex he actually is.

  • Do you like your name? Is there another name you think would fit you better?
  • I have some sort of love-hate relationship with my name because it isn't really a common one, so while I appreciate having some sort of individuality(?), it also makes me feel weirdly vulnerable(?), which is why I go by other names online. I've always loved the name Maya because I think it's really cute and unique (which is why I named one of my characters that), but I wonder if I would be complaining about the same issues I have if that did end up being my name instead.

  • Do you think of yourself as a human being or a human doing? Do you identify yourself by the things you do?
  • I want to be a human being, not a human doing...... I'm just not really sure how to achieve that or how I even identify myself. It's complicated!

  • Are you religious/spiritual?
  • I don't consider myself to be religious/spiritual, but I get some sort of enjoyment out of looking into different beliefs/practices. I get to broaden my scope while having fun, which I guess also inadvertently creates friction with a few people in my life since they don't share the same sentiment. ^.^; I've been a little interested in finding a decent translation of Tao Te Ching since I'm a bit curious about the philosophy behind Taoism.

  • Do you care about your ethnicity?
  • I kind of care in the sense that I think I missed out! I don't see relatives outside of my immediate family that often, especially older ones who might have had their own traditions and stuff. I know I have some sort of cultural background that could be worth caring about, but I feel like I ended up with a very standard "American family" upbringing instead.

  • If you'd grown up in a different environment, do you think you'd have turned out the same?
  • Maybe my personality would be the same, but if I had been born in a city instead of out in the countryside, I just know I could have had a lot more social experiences and probably would be a much happier person.

  • Would you say your website is a fair representation of the "real you"?
  • I would like to think so considering I don't try to fabricate anything, and I might be a little vague about details out of privacy. If anything, I would like to add more to my site and personalize it more.

  • Do you feel like your outside appearance is a fair representation of the "real you"?
  • I think it doesn't, which then actually does represent the "real me", if that even makes sense. How I present myself isn't really how I wish I could look like, but I think that itself is a fair representation for me considering I don't know how to do makeup or do my hair because I haven't put in the effort, or I get too self conscious about the clothes that I want to wear because I don't want my family to judge me. So my outside appearance is the way that it is because of my tendency to worry so much, or something. ^.^;
  • I answered every question in one sitting, for once! Questionnaire is from this site, although I made small changes here and there.

  • 1. Time and date you started this?
  • 9:28pm, August 31st

  • Early 20s, female, US

  • 3. Opinions on musicals?
  • I like animated musicals (i.e., Disney movies), but not live performances

  • I can't think of anything other than Lay's Stax, specifically the buffalo wings flavor. I could destroy a whole can of them in one sitting if I didn't have any self-restraint

  • 5. Have you ever been in love?
  • The very few times I was didn't turn out well, so I only save my heart for fictional characters.

  • 6. Favorite pokemon?

  • 8. TF2 main?
  • I don't know anything about TF2

  • No, although I have a YouTube video playing in the background

  • 24. Are you good at drawing?
  • It's passable... I have a lot I still need to learn...

  • 26. Do you read visual novels?
  • I've completed Sweet Pool and Room No. 9. I guess I picked the craziest ones to start off with. ^.^;;; I tried Saya no Uta before because I thought the premise was interesting, but I dropped it after the first R18 scene. I also played a bit of Dramatical Murder awhile ago since I was a fake fan of it during my early Tumblr phase, but I got really bored

  • No, though I really want to learn the basics. I was taught in a home-ecs class, but I forgot everything

  • I can make a few select meals... I would love to learn a lot more, I just hate how long it takes (though I know I'll get better with more experience)

  • 29. Most expensive thing you've bought?
  • My own laptops, but they both don't work anymore

  • 30. Opinions on cosplay?

  • 31. What's your most hated band/musician?
  • I can't think of a specific band/musician, but I hate classic/"dad" rock and country. And I don't keep up with pop music anymore. I rarely listen to recently released music in general unless it's Vocaloid or something

  • 32. Are you a dramatic person?

  • 39. What are some things you could competently deliver a speech on?

  • 40. Are you good at spelling?
  • I think I'm okay, but I struggle with words that aren't super phonetic(?), like colonel and mortgage. And I lose my confidence with -ious words. But I also trip up on words with double-letters, i.e., I struggled to spell "inaccurate" for a previous question. My biggest issue is accidentally adding extra syllables or just misunderstanding words. Like how some people read "mischievous" as "mis-chee-vi-ous". And then there are also words where I've heard them a lot but have never seen them written (like "segue"). I also always second-guess myself with some past-tense words, like "spelled" and "spelt" (I guess technically both are right). Blah blah blah, you get the idea

  • 41. Which Touhou character *is your favorite?
  • Cirno is the only one I really know. One of the first ever Japanese media videos I ever watched was Cirno's Perfect Math Class, which definitely changed my life (hopefully for the better)

  • I would rather be a vampire because I find them attractive appealing

  • 59. What do you fear most?

  • No. I only own a few plushies I keep somewhere else, and even then, I kind of want to get rid of them...

  • 100. time and date you finished this?
  • 10:30pm, August 31st. I tried not to get distracted at all, but it still took so long. ^.^; I technically kept revisiting this to fix up some answers and format it for my website

  • Here is the original Q&A for anyone else who wants to participate.

    1. Please introduce yourself.
Well. Assuming you hadn't read anything else on my site, which would be crazy if so... I'm Rin, I have a lot of hobbies that I rotate through and sometimes write about here, and I get way too passionate over weird things. I also work a full-time job on the side. Or I guess that wouldn't be the side thing in terms of what occupies my time. Whatever.

    2. How long have you been making websites?
My first attempt was during my final semester in high school, but there was a gap in progress from then until nearly 2 years later.

    3. And what got you into the hobby?
I probably wouldn't have gotten into it if it weren't for one of my teachers + an online friend who has her own site hosted on Neocities. I signed up for a coding class that my school offered because I wanted to work towards my ambitious Game Designer dreams, but the class itself ended up being a study hall. I would spend that time working on a site that my friend had set up for me with my teacher occasionally helping me out (mostly by catching my mistakes). I've been considering reaching out to her and thanking her for all of the encouragement she gave me...

    4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
In the "smallweb" space, I'm usually more drawn into a site's writing over its design, but I appreciate it when both aspects go perfectly hand-in-hand. I love getting the sense that a website was made solely for the love of the craft, and that feeling usually comes from when someone creates their own assets and/or include more personalized images and writings.

    5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
Type out code for a vague idea I have, undo all of the code because I hate it, retype it, undo it...... Some pages started as me playing around and coming up with things as they go (like the webmistress and lolita page), and some of them have been very trial-and-error over the months (like my blog page).

    6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
I adore Ally and Lapin's sites because of how passionate they are about their hobbies, artwork, and other lifestyle things, plus their sites are just too cute! I appreciate sites where I could spend at least a good hour reading through every page on a site, although I do have a bad habit of saving those kinds of things for a "rainy day".

    7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
The creative freedom! The only limitations (excluding specific webhost restrictions) come from not knowing how to do something, but there's always an opportunity to learn. The learning process itself is sometimes fun. Sometimes. I at least find it very rewarding to finally be free from a Coding Hell Session and create something that I'm happy with.

    8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
I sort of struggle with breaking out of the 2-column/3-column structure, but I want to experiment I also keep daydreaming of creating more custom assets so that my site is even more personalized. I'm just lazy... orz

    9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
See previous answer. Most of my pages start off with the same 3-column template, but I always try editing everything so that they each stand out.

    10. How confident are you with CSS?
I'm not amazing at it and coming up with all of my own things, but I'm happy with what I have.

    11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
I've never seen <dl> in my life until this Q&A. But I might utilize it for a later purpose I have in mind.

    12. What is your favourite HTML element?
I use summary/detail all over my site, in case you didn't notice. It's simple, but effective......

    13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Create a "box" (frame) div that's centered in the page. After that would be divs for the sidebar(s) and "main" section + setting the background image.

    14. Do you know JavaScript?
I don't "know" JavaScript that much, but I use a lot of it on my site. I want to get around to learning the basics one day instead of slapping together a bunch of clunky code snippets.

    15. How about PHP?
I don't know anything on PHP considering there isn't support for it on Neocities. I originally wanted to look into it for a miniblog functionality, but I made a workaround through GitHub and JavaScript.

    16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
I try to at least be consistent with fonts and readability. My biggest focus is to have my pages reflect my genuine preferences in color palettes, written content, etc., and my pages seem to be similar enough to fit into a "theme". This is Sunfish Dreamworld, afterall... Whatever that means.

    17. Are you more focused on content or design?
I mentioned it earlier, but I'm more interested in content. I've come across so many visually impressive sites that I initially like looking at, but then I realize that a lot of the links are still a WIP and the content on the homepage doesn't stand out to me, so I rarely ever revisit the site. I kind of believe that people should try having at least a few working pages instead of perfecting their index/homepage so that I could have a better appreciation for who's behind the site, rather than the site itself.

    18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
No, though I kind of want to just because it would be fun. I would like to obtain sunfishdreamworld.net someday...

    19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
I used to like them (and "nostalgia-focused" content as a whole), but now I'm a little tired of it. I'm a sentimental person, but the webcore/oldweb/dreamcore/whatevercore content as of late just feels so detached to what it's trying to replicate (most of the time). I also don't think it's that healthy (maybe not the best term but I'm not sure what else to use) to base your identity around a time that you can't experience anymore. Unless you're trying to go for a specific theme for your site or another art project. But that just loops back to what I already said.

    20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
If my HTML can work without the page exploding, then that's good enough for me.

    21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
They're cute! Some people think that the site button trend excludes people who don't have buttons, but I see that as an excuse to try out something new... I learned how to animate a character blinking for my own button, and there are so many other things that you can achieve with such a tiny canvas. And if someone likes your site enough, they would just link you in another way, so I don't think that the "exclusion" thing is a real issue.

    22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
I could spend hours going through button walls dedicated to other websites. I feel kind of mixed on graphic button/stamp walls though. I enjoy looking at others until there's just too many to go through. I used to have a button/stamp/blinkies wall of my own, but then I thought it looked a little tacky.

    23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
Likely something very similar to what I have now. I wouldn't really mind what I end up going for so long as I can just have my writings and other creations somewhere.

    24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
I get a little envious over a few specific sites, but I view them with inspiration instead of jealousy. I'm kind of more envious over how much time some of these people can dedicate to their sites. orz

    25. What text editor do you use?
Google Docs. But it's really annoying sometimes.

    26. Why do you use that one?
It's what I've always used for just about all of my writing stuff.

    27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
You should always host your own images. In my opinion. But I do host mp3 + mp4 files on filegarden since they're behind a paywall on Neocities.

    28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
Nekoweb used to be referred to as the "annoying gen Z containment zone" by a lot of people, but I feel like Neocities isn't any different from that. I never really browse through Nekoweb, so I know I'm missing out on at least a few websites that I probably would like.

    29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
My site folder is currently at 186 MB, and I can't be bothered to check any other details. It shouldn't be that crazy though.

    30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
I have very outdated files on a flash drive from when I had to export everything from my corrupted laptop. Maybe I should go through it someday to update it + hopefully find my old shrine pages hidden somewhere.

    31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
I don't really mind as long as there's at least some structure and it isn't too cluttered.

    32. Do you stick to certain colors? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
I try sticking with pink, purple, and teal for my "main" pages. I love those colors together as-is, but I also associate them with my OCs. I put a lot of thought into these sorts of things...

    33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
I considered it back at the start when I really struggled to get into coding, but after I got over the learning curve, all I ever want to do is work on my site. As for leaving Neocities, I've considered it because of some of its aforementioned restrictions. I used to like the "social" features for discovering sites, but now I find that aspect of NC to be annoying. I don't care too much since it's just a webhost at the end of the day, I just need to remind myself not to look at the activity feeds.

    34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
I've made a few webmaster friends since establishing my own site. I've sent emails and left guestbook messages in the small hopes of creating connections, but I'm also okay with just being able to make someone's day better. ^.^

    35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
Only my close friends, although I make the offhand comment that I "code sometimes" when someone asks me what I do or what I've been up to.

    36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
Updates that I push to Neocities happen maybe twice a month depending on what kind of weeks I have, but I open up VS Code a lot just to polish up things and add new content in sporadic chunks.

    37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
My site has gone through a lot of changes over the past year, but the homepage and other pages have retained its 3-column appearance. I would love to mess around with different layouts and content.

    38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
Probably all 3, but like a 40-40-20-percent split.

    39. Do you do web design professionally?
No. My job has nothing to do with tech-y stuff.

    40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
I don't see myself doing anything "professional" in the near future. I would like to at least get good enough at coding to create pages in different styles because then maybe I could help my friends/family get into smallweb if they ever wanted to. I feel like doing it professionally would kill my passion.

    41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
I had a handful of exchanges before switching to Discord, although I kind of miss the emailing format... I guess the next best thing would be penpaling my webmistress friends. I've also been meaning to write out a few emails to other webmistresses.

    42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
I mentioned this in my webmistress page, but the only social media I actively use aren't even really "social media" in the engagement sense. I came to "reject" social media in early 2024 for a few personal reasons.

    43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
Discord, but only for a handful of friends and small groups that I'm not that active in.

    44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
Not really. I either have YouTube videos play in the background or just work in silence.

    45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
I have everything on one site, and I'll probably keep it that way.

    46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
I guess many, but they're mostly grouped by what type of topics they are (writing, shrines, quizzes, etc.)

    47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
    I try to present my real self without giving away too many personal details both for privacy and "persona" reasons. I'm a little guilty of trying to seem "more interesting than I actually am", but I do that by leaving the super boring details of my life out rather than over-exaggerating myself. That's just a habit I've always had though. ^.^;

    48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
Yes! I have! You can find them listed as my "neighbors" in the outlinks section.

    49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
I'm not sure if this is asking about my own HTML/CSS or if it's asking about it as a whole. My HTML/CSS is okay. It was kind of a mess until I went through all of my lines of code. HTML/CSS itself is okay. I'm sad that stuff like the center tags are considered outdated.

    50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
Using images with giant sizes that cause the page to take forever to load and lag if you try scrolling.

    51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
Compress their image files and name/organize them appropriately. I've also found it helpful to put notes into the codes so I don't forget how an element functions or what all I have styled.

    52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
I don't know if this is referring to anything specific. My code is probably generic, but I don't see anything wrong with that.

    53. Do you consider different browsers?
Not really, but it should be fine. I know that there's issues with custom scrollbars on Firefox, but I have a line of code that (hopefully) works with disabling the scrollbar appearance across multiple browsers.

    54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
Google Chrome. I don't really want to convince others to use it. If anything, you should probably use something other than Google Chrome. But that's the browser on the laptop that I've been borrowing, and it's convenient for me because of my gmail accounts and Google drive.

    55. And what OS are you on?
    Windows 10.

    56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
I just happen to use it while ignoring every pop-up asking me to update to Windows 11. It's a shame that they stopped supporting 10...

    57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
My website is as mobile-friendly as it probably can be without using flexboxes. I used to have a huge code snippet that would resize and readjust all of my divs to fit any screen size, but I hated it. I changed it so that my layouts are in one big invisible div with the sidebar(s) and main section fitting snuggly inside of it, so even if my site appears small on phone screens, it's all contained and nothing overlaps or breaks. I'm kind of surprised by the amount of other 3-column sites I've visited that break on mobile (or any screen size that isn't the same as whoever made the site).

    58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
I'm not too concerned about "accessability" in the smallweb scene. That being said, autoplay is so lame. I'll instantly mute the site or even close out of it when autoplay is enabled.

    59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
They're fun, though I wish that webring owners were more consistent with removing inactive members. I understand that everyone gets busy, but sometimes I go through the members list and end up disappointed by how many sites are defunct or don't even fit the ring's theme. Every time I get annoyed by a webring, I just think: "Arrrrggh! Let me clean up the members list for you!! I'll do it for free!!!"

    60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
I have a "husbando" shrine for Shirogane from Monochrome Factor and a page dedicated to lolita fashion. I enjoy basing an entire page off of one (1) oddly specific thing so that I can really go in-depth about the topic.

    61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
Some parts of my website probably give off that "this is my little corner of the internet" impression, but that's kind of unintentional oops... I just code and write about whatever I want without caring so much.

    62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
A site with a variety in content while sticking (closely) to a visual theme, bonus points for original assets/artwork. I would love to make a few pagedolls and have a page dedicated to my other projects.

    63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
I guess I'm an artist, though I haven't drawn much as of late (aside from small doodles in my sketchbook). I keep mentioning how I want to create my own assets for here someday, aside from the media log pagedoll that I've had for awhile. I'm not super in love with it, but I at least appreciate how I implemented the random generation feature.

    64. What are your favourite resource sites?
I never really use anything from "sozai" sites + I don't visit w3schools much anymore. My go-to site is tinypng so that I can reduce image file sizes, and I switched to filegarden for mp3/mp4 hosting.

    65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
I always forget to proof-read my code one last time before publishing updates. Or I somehow gloss over my mistakes until after the update goes through. It drives me crazy!

    66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
Learn the absolute basics (paragraphs, colors, etc.), use a template, put in your own text. Once you get familiar with navigating a coding program, slowly change the template that you're using. Look at sites you like that also don't have crazy layouts to see how they work. Implement what you like about other sites to your own site... Everything afterwards kind of just Happens as you go. But that's all based on my own experiences, so YMMV.

    67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
I only hard-code for very specific snippets, though I have an overall "decor" stylesheet, and then I have a stylesheet for this homepage.

    68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
I'm not 100% sure what a "frameset" layout is. Repth's layouts are wonderful and helped me learn how to code. I can't say the same for that one layout generator used all over Neocities.

    69. How about table-based layouts?
If they're still supported by HTML5, then I don't understand why some people get upset by them.

    70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
I'm not really sure what "subscribing to the ideas" means. I've already mentioned a bunch that most of my pages have a 2-column/3-column set-up, though I always try to change it up a bit. I can understand people finding them boring.

    71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
Not including my writing works, probably HTML... It takes me forever to figure out where I want things to be.

    72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
My very early coding experiences were made up of text on a blank page, but I did set a max-width so that it didn't span across the entire screen.

    73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
That's kind of how I ended up creating my webmistress page because I got stuck with how I wanted my homepage to look. I opened up a canvas in my drawing program to put together a moodboard, which was how I created my "logo", which I then added to a new page, which I then turned into my "about me"...

    74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
Somewhere in the middle. I can understand how most of my code works when I look at it, but I still have a lot to learn!

    75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
All of the time! Unless they disable right-clicking and Ctrl+U. Sad...

    76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
    Refer to question 66.

    77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
If I force elements to do things they're not supposed to do but it's still not working as I had hoped, then something is definitely wrong with my code that I need to fix... The most egregious thing I do would probably be using margin-left/right/top/bottom for a lot of divs.

    78. Thoughts on floating elements?
They can make or break a page. Literally... Use them wisely...

    79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
Pixels for the framework, percentages for images/text inside of divs/main content.

    80. Do you have a favourite font?
I'm happy with the fonts that I use for this site. Those being Balsamiq Sans, Proggy Clean, Garamond+Serif, Magica, and Hina/ひな. Well. That's just a list of everything, but my absolute favorite is Balsamiq Sans. Obviously. Hina is really cute for the rare chances I get to use Japanese characters.

    81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
I've thought about running a webring or fanlistings with another person. Those sorts of things would take a lot of time to put together though...

    82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
Maybe once in awhile. It's more of a sporadic activity where I go through a lot in one session.

    83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
I try not to bookmark any sites only because this isn't my laptop.

    84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
Sometimes I feel like a hypocrite when I say that I don't have an "audience in mind" for my site. I more specifically don't care about having followers to impress. It hasn't happened often, but I appreciate it when someone comments that I have a "unique taste" in something. I've mostly received this in reference to my favorite anime and characters.

    85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
I love older gaming consoles and fliphones, even if I don't have a collection. The oldest piece of technology that I own is my beloved secondhand GameCube.

    86. How often and for how long are you online?
I always have my phone on standby, but I've been using it less and less.

    87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
If I had to put a name to it, then my target audience would be other adult women, first and foremost. Especially if they're also into creative works and are into "weird" things. I'm trying to send telepathic messages for these types of girls to stumble across my site.

    88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
I don't know what that is.

    89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
    No.

    90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I'm so out of the webdev loop. I've seen "SSG" thrown around before but I'm absolutely clueless.

    91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
I always get secondhand embarrassment (or awkwardness?) when people celebrate their Neocities visitor count because it's kind of obvious that it's inaccurate... I use two different hitcounters that seem to count "real views" and are more insightful.

    92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
I've been browsing different forums/boards that align with my interests (like Animal Crossing, lolita fashion, webdev, etc.). They're very fun to read through for advice and inspiration, especially with how inconvenient search algorithms seem to be sometimes.

    93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
I use Google Docs for my longer writings (usually blogs and media log stuff) while typing directly into the editor for quizzes and small snippets. I feel like I've answered this before.

    94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
I've received many kind messages and compliments in my guestbook and emails, which I'll forever cherish! "Appearing cool" kind of seems like a subjective thing and I'm not even sure what about me would "appear cool", but I'd like to think that I have some sort of individuality going on.

    95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
My embarrassment for my old works mostly comes from a place of growing up. If something old makes me cringe, then I take that as a sign that I've improved enough to be able to see a difference in my skills. Or something like that.

    96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
I wouldn't close it down. I want it to stay up for as long as possible, which is why I have that "in case of" disclaimer on my index.

    97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I feel like I've answered this before x2.

    98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
Aaahhh. I always worry about picking out the bestest of my friends, but if I had to reveal anything, then it would probably be the few remaining members from a server that was once dedicated to Devilman... I still can't believe that I've been a part of that group for so many years now! One of them is (was?) making their own site, and if my other friends decided to get into webdev, I just know that their sites would be wonderful. And maybe a little insane.

    99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
Of course... Is that even a question...

    100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
It took me forever to get through this. As does everything I suppose...... This quiz did motivate me to clean up my code (currently in the process of removing my center tags) and check if all of my images are optimized. This was a very productive thought exercise.

    Nobody-Asked Questions

    Can my graphics be used?
  • The fujoshi above (gifted by a friend), the "made by a girl" pixel art, and the yume-ring graphic are all personalized to look like me + I would appreciate my art not being reuploaded anywhere (even though I don't have a lot of my art on my own site >_>). All of the other graphics on this site aren't made by me, so I don't mind at all. I have some graphics and other resources in the outlinks page.

  • How did I do (XYZ)?
  • I add "Stack Overflow" at the end of all of my searches when I want to figure out how to do/fix things, and I also look at various sites for inspiration. I'll right-click on something from a site and mess with the code inspection (unless a site owner disabled right-clicking/Ctrl+U, which is something I won't do) just to see how it works. You can look through my code for some snippets, but don't be too greedy!

  • What does "if this site unexpectedly goes inactive, assume that something out of my control happened" on my index page mean?
  • Even if I don't work on my website for awhile, I try my best to give updates about my whereabouts. On the off-chance that I'm inactive for months and months, that notice is my way of saying, "something crazy happened and I probably won't be back!"

  • I originally uploaded this image to my Anilist profile, but I wanted to use my website as an excuse to go more in-depth about my selections. Note that each catergory can expand if you click on the dropboxes.

    Favorite anime of all time
  • I'm actually not very confident about what my favorite anime is, though I could (probably) easily pick my favorite manga. I went with Sailor Moon since it's very integral to my anime experience, and I'm highlighting Sailor Moon R: The Movie because I really like Fiore as a non-canonical character from a non-canonical spin-off of a non-canonical arc from the TV series.

  • Best story
  • I actually just finished rewatching Heaven Official's Blessing (TGCF) season 2 last week (as of the time of me writing this). I was a little worried that my thoughts on it would change in the past year, but I still really enjoyed it. The ending to episode 10 was really intense, and 11 is one of my favorite episodes of any anime (technically donghua) because of how Xie Lian berates himself juxtaposed with how Hua Cheng tries to comfort him. I wasn't that passionate about the story in the beginning, but the second season/book makes me care a whole lot about the characters (especially Xie Lian) and what's happening in the Three Realms.

  • Favorite art style
  • I watched Metropolis on a call with friends and we couldn't stop saying "how???" because of just how amazing it was. Tezuka's art style looked perfect in this movie, and the environments and other props are so beautiful. And the animation is crazy-good too. And there are so many cool perspective shots and "camera" angles. I was in awe...

  • "I'll watch it someday"
  • I've been wanting to get into Fruits Basket for so long, but I was intimidated by where to start (the release of the newer adaptation didn't help). I started reading the manga last month and got to about chapter 35, but I haven't read any more in awhile. I'll get around to the anime at some point...

  • Big personal impact
  • I already wrote about Re:Birthday in my media log, and I don't really have much to add. I think I found it extra special because it was some sort of chance-encounter thing.

  • Best combat
  • I really like the concept of Contractors in Darker than Black and how they each use/regain their abilities. I can't remember many specific fight scenes, but I like how Hei picked and approached his opponents + the fights were very fun and easy to follow along.

  • You like, everyone hates
  • For whatever reason, I watched 2 episodes of Darker than Black "back in the day", and then I skipped to season 2. I finally watched the first season last year and while it's infinitely better, I don't think Gemini of the Meteor was awful... But maybe I'm biased because I wanted to be Suou sooo bad as a kid.

  • You hate, everyone likes
  • Only a few people know how much I despise Devilman Crybaby. And it's not like I was some Hardcore Devilman Fan before watching this— this was the first thing from the franchise I ever saw, and I was so lost the entire time + the second half just felt like cry-bait to me. And then I became a Hardcore Devilman Fan afterwards because I was so underwhelmed by what I watched. And then my hatred for Crybaby grew more and more...

  • Underrated
  • I kept mixing up "underrated" and "overlooked", so I went through the anime on my list and there aren't really any that I like but have a score I thought was too low. Nearly all of them were in the 70-90/100 range, though I saw that Platonic Chain had an average score of 50/100. This could also probably count as an "overlooked" anime since I'm not sure how many people have seen it. And I haven't even finished it yet. But I think the concept of it is fun.

  • Overrated
  • Maybe I should just rewatch Your Name because I was so bored the first time I watched it and don't really know why it was popular for so long. It had an interesting concept (to my memory) but the characters were so uninteresting to me + I felt like the anime just had Instagram filters over it instead of the styling looking genuine (if that even makes sense).

  • "Why do I like this?"
  • I found Winter Cicada through a screencap of it I saw on Pinterest, and I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I like it. It's not even "offensive" like other anime on my list, it just looks and feels low budget, and it has a lot of themes/concepts that are probably not that appealing to others. It's kind of like a Romeo and Juliet scenario where two guys on the opposite side of a war are in love with each other, and bad things happen to them once their relationship is discovered. I was kind of compelled by the characters' relationship because of how unstable it is and how unstable the characters themselves become throughout the OVA.

  • Anime you can watch 100 times
  • I love the English dub for Devilman: The Birth so much. I watched this with a friend who was already familar with the series, which is probably how I ended up getting really into it. I've rewatched it on my own so many times + I've shown it to a few people that I know In Real Life.

  • That atmosphere...
  • I looove the atmosphere for Petshop of Horrors. It's tonally different from the manga, but in a good way. The OVA leans a lot more into the "horrors" of Count D's petshop and what happens to the customers that don't listen to his warnings. I think it also has to do with the upload that I watched where the quality was kind of low and everything had some sort of glowing effect going on. And the OST is so good. And a couple of the scenes really shocked me. If I didn't watch PSoH, I would probably put malice@doll here because that anime is so "otherworldly" to me, which is a feeling I'm always trying to experience in media.

  • Bad day cure
  • I only watched the first season of Aria, but it was a pleasant experience. All of the characters are cute, and I had fun watching them all on their gondola adventures. I could also probably put Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou here.

  • Favorite character
  • Shirogane was the only thing that got me through Monochrome Factor. I was just skimming through episodes last night (as of me writing this) and the anime is so unbelievably bad. I'm probably starting to like Manga Shirogane more, but he's here as my anime pick for now.

  • Favorite spin-off
  • Maybe this isn't technically a spin-off and it's just an OVA adaptation of the manga, but also the OVAs and TV series are drastically different from the manga + I just wanted an excuse to put Read or Die on here. A very short but sweet experience. I watched this in 2023, but it felt like I was watching anime for the first time again, which is another feeling I like to experience with media. I love Yomiko and Nancy so much...

  • Biggest letdown
  • I was kind of enjoying the first half of Cardcaptor Sakura, but then the second half just completely flopped for me. Sakura having to capture all of the cards again to make them hers was kind of boring, and I didn't really care about anything relating to Clow. The thing that irked me the most was the Yukito/Touya parts.
  • I was sad seeing Yukito gradually getting more tired and sick because he didn't know about Yue, but any time Touya wanted to tell him the truth about it, he would just be vague by saying "Yukito... Listen to me... I must tell you... you... I..." etc. only to get interrupted by that one character. I would see clips of these moments shared around with people shipping them because it looks like Touya is trying to confess his love, and I'm sure that CLAMP purposefully framed it that way, but I feel like I'm the only one that can't watch those scenes without thinking that Touya is an awful friend (LOL). He does this over and over again only to get cut off by that one character, and he just never seems to make an attempt in a private area? But once Touya finally does get to talk to Yukito after that one character is like "Oh fine, I guess you win this time. You can talk to your friend without me stopping you now" (???) it's just like. Oh, okay. That's it. That's what this was building up to. I know it's kind of silly that this is the only thing I remember about the finale, though I think that's because I just didn't care about anything else. I'm also not sure if my nitpicks are fair since I haven't watched this in years, so there's a chance that I'm wrong about things.

  • "Back in the day" anime
  • I was extremely into Black Butler back when I first got into anime. I had so much merch and would make so much fanart and was so obsessed with a few of the characters... I forget what happens in season 1 and 2, but I remember season 3 and the OVA being really good. I've been meaning to try catching up to the anime.

  • Best music/OST
  • All of the music is so fitting for the environments and specific scenes of Ai no Kusabi (1992), and I haven't heard too many similar tracks. I can't really explain it in a way that does it justice. I wouldn't recommend the OVA to everyone, but the OST is online for anyone who wants to go through it. Track 12 is probably my favorite.

  • Criminally overlooked
  • I don't think I ever would have watched The Case of Hana & Alice if I hadn't seen it in some sort of store in a mall. There's so much that I adore about this movie, mostly the animation and main characters. There's also a "plot twist" in it that really surprised me, and it made me care for Hana and Alice. It kind of makes me sad that the only exposure people have had to this is one of its songs being trendy on Tik Tok. You've probably even heard it before (I love the vocal version a lot more). I've been meaning to watch the live action "sequel"...

  • Depressing anime
  • I felt such an indescribable pit in my stomach when I first watched Kaze to Ki no Uta. I had a phase where I couldn't decide if this was some sort of beautiful masterpiece or an unnecessarily graphic story. I'm currently leaning more towards the former sentiment. My heart always aches for Gilbert and Serge.

  • Favorite active series
  • Apothecary Diaries has been so fun to watch. I was kind of avoiding it because some of the (Maomao) fans I saw before were really annoying, but I read a few volumes of the manga last year and liked it. I recently wanted to find something to bingewatch, but I didn't anticipate going through 32+ episodes within 3 days. It's been so long since I've watched something as it's airing, and it's so painful to wait every week for a new episode... How do people do this...

  • Original pick
  • There's so much that I enjoy about Death Parade, though I probably don't love it as much as I did before. I thought that the tone of it was done so well (for the most part), and the concept of people getting judged to be sent to Heaven or Hell through "death" games is really fun.

  • "Not usually my thing, but..."
  • I feel kind of iffy about picking High School of the Dead, but I couldn't think of anything else. I first watched this when I was a kid because it was very popular back then for Reasons, but I just wanted to watch characters fighting zombies. It's extremely stereotypical and I don't enjoy how the cast is mostly made up of annoying teenagers, but the action is so over the top and the animation is way too consistent and fluent for its own good to the point where it's kind of like a Mindless Slop Anime for me.
  • Questions are from this prompt list, which I'm still going through. I'm not doing all of the questions since some of them don't interest me.

  • Would you prefer to live in the country or the city?
  • I already live in the country, and there isn't a lot that I enjoy about it, but the city seems overwhelming. I think I'd enjoy some sort of middle ground, like some sort of resident-friendly town that's walkable and fun and stuff.

  • If you could learn a new skill, what would it be?
  • I've always wanted to get into painting and clay figure + plushie making, but I've never really tried those things before. I would also like to get better at cooking. It's not a "new" skill for me, but I only know how to make a few things.

  • What was your favorite book as a child?
  • I can't think of any books for some reason. My school had this program where we could track all of the books we read, but then our accounts would be deleted once we graduated, which makes me really sad! The Merman is the only book that comes to mind right now, even though I haven't read it in so long. I've been wanting to find a copy of this since the only thing I remember about it is how it made me wish I had my own merman friend or something. ^.^;

  • Do you prefer reading paper or electronic books?
  • I prefer reading manga digitally with a few exceptions, and I think I can only read novels physically. I like how I don't have to worry about manga panels being obscured by the book "gutter" or by shadows, but I already stare at screens long enough to be straining my eyes at smaller text. I've been slowly collecting physical copies of Heaven Official's Blessing, and it feels so nice to have the books in my hands. I'm kind of interested in the Apothecary Diaries light novel, but I don't want to buy even more books right now, but I'm also on the fence about reading it online.

  • Are you a restless sleeper?
  • I've had sleeping issues ever since I was a kid, which is mostly why my original characters/story revolve around sleeping disorders.

  • Do you consider yourself a romantic?
  • I enjoy seeing and imagining characters in romantic scenarios + I think that hearts and chocolates and flowers and stuff are cute, but I can't imagine myself pursuing something for myself.

  • Do you like spicy food?
  • It depends for me. I enjoy the pain of it, but the food has to be good too... I don't like hot wings because the chicken itself seems dry (at least the ones that I've had) + the sauces I've tried aren't my favorites, but I really liked Shin Ramyun the first time I had it. I'd love to eat more spicy food...
  • I thought it'd be fun to share some of my favorite and least favorite purchases. I want to be more considerate about what I buy in the future, and this could also give others a sense of what my style is. I'll take my own pictures of some of the products at some point.

  • Favorite: KSB coaster — I bought this in 2023 along with other merch for series, and even though I'm not super into it right now, I love this coaster so much and use it all of the time.

  • Least favorite: Mini ceramic cat pots — I got these because I thought I would get into plants this year, but uuuuhhhhum... >_>; The pots are very tiny, and I couldn't find any plants that would fit other than succulents (I don't like succulents). I gave two of the pots to my friend who is probably using them for their intended purpose.

  • Favorite: Yomiko 1/8 Kotobukiya figure — I would always look online for this figure ever since she became my holy grail, but I always saw her going for $200-$400 in various conditions. I eventually found a listing on eBay where she was being sold for $90, and I bought it immediately. I'm so glad I did! She's in perfect condition and I still love her very much.

  • Least favorite: Kaworu nendoroid (plugsuit ver.) — I saw this at a convention and bought it despite how expensive it was more me considering it goes for even more online. The novelty wore off for me after a month or so because I discovered that I really hate nendoroids. It also didn't help that my Evangelion phase didn't last long.

  • Favorite: Forvencer undated planner — This is the only planner that has consistently worked for me. I like how the weeks are organized with a "main goals" and "habits" sections. I thought I wouldn't like undated planners because I'd have to write them in, but I actually prefer it since it's really not that hard to do + I don't have to worry about wasting the planner if I miss weeks. I wish I utulized the calendar and extra pages in the back, but I don't really have a reason to use them.

  • Least favorite: 2024 MOTHER Summers Weeks planner (+ accessories) — This was my first and only Hobonichi that I bought. I used to visit the official sites every now and then to windowshop, and I ordered this planner for $40 because I thought it was cute. I already knew I wasn't a planner/scrapbooking type of person when I bought this, but I thought maybe I could force myself to become one, and that never happened. Even when I tried not to feel bad about cute layouts I saw online, I just didn't like the paper quality and my handwriting + other things about it. It felt like I was always wasting space, and it just wasn't fun to look at. I was thinking of going back to fill in the dates since I've been keeping notes of what I do every day.

  • Favorite: Hyeta 32oz water bottle — I got this for 2023 Christmas, and it's probably the best water bottle I've ever had. Considering it was only $10, I think it's really high quality. I've dropped this so many times from different heights and at different forces (even onto concrete flooring when I'm at work), but there's barely even a scratch on it. I've never had anything leak or any other issues. I like how there are measurements and suggested times on the bottle so that I'm constantly reminded of how much I should be drinking. It's also super cute since I got the pink version.

  • I thought it would be fun to write about some Tips & Tricks that I've come across and created myself. I will say that they vary in usefulness depending on who you are, and I'm still not the most well put-together person out there. But! I will still share my wisdom for anyone interested. ^.^

    Journals, planners, sketchbooks

I always thought that I wasn't the type of person who could keep up with consistently journaling, planning, and drawing up until I finally figured out a system + mindset that (mostly) works for me, so I thought that I could write about it here.

If you're struggling to get into or maintain these sorts of routines, I personally think it's better to figure out what doesn't work for you rather than trying to find the "perfect" book and/or app.

    Some of my preferences:

physical books for planning + in-depth journaling, minimalistic cover and layout, small/thicker books with hardcover instead of big/flimsy books, undated planners

    My current system:

    Digital Physical
  • Daily summaries - notes app
  • Dream diary - DreamKit
  • Small tasks - timer app
  • Undated planner
  • Campus notebook for journaling
  • $5 sketchbook
  • 5-year prompt book
  • This doesn't include everything that I use, like my blog or the media tracking apps that I use. Those are things I do on the side for fun, and I don't rely(?) on them for productivity.

    Some of my thoughts:

I get to skip over weeks in my planner without wasting any pages since I have to set up each spread (which isn't hard at all). I prefer smaller, sturdier books because the bigger the page size, the more I feel the need to write + it's hard to take the book out and about. I would rarely get into 5 pages of a sketchbook because I would make myself think that I'm not "using it right", so I bought a cheap sketchbook from Walmart and told myself that it was "nothing but a bunch of printer paper that just so happens to be held together". This mindset especially has been so helpful for me! I stopped caring about making my routine "aesthetic" and usually avoid looking for inspiration online. I can't buy any new books until I fill out the ones that I currently have. When starting my new routine, I avoided any books that looked cute because I thought I would "ruin" them.

    Journaling methods:

  • Summary of the day/week/month. Kind of self-explanatory.

  • "Current thoughts": Quickly jotting down every single thought that I have so that I don't have to worry about forgetting them and can come back to later.

  • "Bothersome list": Similar to "current thoughts", I write down everything that's mildly bothering me. I mostly use this after looking around my room, or if I've been sitting on a bunch of projects.

  • I have a page dedicated to goals that are categorized under "ASAP", "Next 6 months", and "1 year from now" + a "side quests" list for fun activities. Even if some of my goals change overtime, I enjoy creating a little guide for myself and setting up my next some months.

  • I bought this 5-year memory journal from Walmart back in 2023. Even though I don't keep up with it every day, it's very rewarding to look back and see my answers from previous years. Some of the prompts are time-sensitive (like "what did you eat for dinner today"... That is leaving my memory after 12 hours...), but there are some other prompts where I can go back if I've missed them and put myself in the mindeset of Past Rin.

    Coding Tips

Note that these tips are mostly small things to add to your site, so this probably isn't useful at all for people who aren't at least somewhat familiar with HTML/CSS. I plan to make "advanced" and maybe also beginner-friendly "tutorials" at some point. There are a lot of ways you can make your site more stylized without having to do much!

I want to reiterate that web design is only a hobby for me + I'm mostly self-taught, so my coding style isn't the best sometimes. It shouldn't be an issue for these tips, but if someone reading this has more knowledge than me and notices that I put together something weirdly complicated/clunky (or it's just entirely wrong somehow), I wouldn't mind feedback!

For anyone out there that is strictly using Neocities's code builder, I recommend using anything else... Be free... Or don't, that's okay! I haaated coding through Neocities, so I've been using VS Code with a live preview feature. I can make all sorts of changes to my site, and no one else will see it until I'm happy with my updates, save the files, and upload them to Neocities. I used to have a VS Code to GitHub to Neocities thing where I only had to click a couple of buttons to automatically update my site, but I accidentally broke this script when I switched laptops and never bothered to fix it.

  • A very small but effective way to make a layout more unique (← subjective) is adding rounded corners to divs and images. And that's it! I use border-radius: 6px on nearly all of my "boxes" and images, though I've also stylized my boxes differently on my webmistress page.

  • If you hover over the images, you can also see that some of them move. One of my favorite discoveries was applying animations/transformations to random elements. There are a lot that you can find online or create yourself (like jumping/wiggling/spinning effects), though I can only offer the small zoom + tilt animation that you can copy and paste into your files.

You can play with this even more, like changing the color of images when hovering over them.

When using images, setting the width/height to percentages (%) instead of pixels (px) usually prevents a lot of issues with elements overflowing/breaking out of the divs that they're in. It also helps if you're using multiple images and want a consistent look. Instead of having a bunch of random numbers for your image size to fit a given div (like giving every image the width of 237px for a div that's 400px wide), I find it easier to visualize, "I want this image to take up 80% of this div's width, so I'll set the width to 80%". This also applies to videos, divs, etc.

The tabcontent script solos iframes any day. In my opinion... But I should probably explain what any of this means......

Have you noticed on my site (and many others) that even when you click certain buttons in a navigation section, it changes the text in the "main section" that you were already looking at instead of taking you to a new page? Some people achieve this effect by using iframes, which was also what I did for a very early version of Sunfish Dreamworld. It's basically like creating a "cut-out" in the "main section" (by using the target function I think... I can't remember), and you create extra pages ("outlinks.html", "sitemap.html", "blog_entry1.html", etc.) to fill in that cut-out. I hated how cluttered it made my site folder, and if someone were to right-click on any of the buttons in your navigation that is supposed to display the iframe, they can just open the page in a new tab and view your site as (presumably) unintended. Instead of seeing "www.site.org/home/outlinks", they would be seeing "www.site.org/outlinks". If that makes sense. There's also sometimes a tiny delay when switching through iframes (at least, what I've noticed) because it's grabbing the other html files to display. These aren't huge issues + they're helpful if you wanted to incorporate something like a guestbook without having to leave your site. I just didn't really like it.

I switched to using a tabcontent script after seeing a visual novel review page where clicking each title in the navigation section instantly brought up the review in the main area. I looked through the webmaster's code and noticed that every review was on this one page of html instead of multiple html pages being linked to the review page, and I really wanted to recreate this. Although I won't go in-depth about how to achieve this now, I'll at least point you in the right direction for anyone interested. I followed this navigation tabs tutorial from W3Schools and slowly applied it to my own site. If using scripts scares you, the script itself is only about 5-15 lines long (depending on how exactly you want it to function), and once you put it in your code, you shouldn't have to touch it again!

Similar to adding small animations to images and other elements, you can even add an "ease in" animation for when you highlight links. It's one of those things that a lot of people probably don't notice, but I do, and that's all that matters...

    No animation Ease in animation

There have been so many times where I wanted to recreate something for my own site, but when I try to describe what I'm looking for, it always seems like the internet has no idea what I'm talking about, so I feel like an idiot when I try searching "how do i put a bunch of images together and they're all close together like on pinterest or something???". So this section is a little encylopedia of terms to point you in the right direction, and I'll keep updating it as I remember/come across more.

  • Masonry layout - That "put the images close together like on Pinterest" thing that I just described. This is what I used for my "moodboard" section, although you can edit it however you please!

  • Custom tooltip - For text appearing when you hover over an element. I used malihu's jQuery plugin.

  • Details/summary - I use this ALL over my site. I'm even using it right now! It's for when you click on text with a drop arrow, and more text appears under it.
  • If you want to remove or replace the drop arrow, you just have to customize the style of it.

  • I'm open to more suggestions on what coding tips I could write more about since I'm probably overlooking a few. ^.^;

If you accidentally burn a pot or pan while cooking, the black marks can be removed by putting in water, a generous amount of baking soda, and bringing it to a boil and later scrubbing the bottom. Rinse and repeat if necessary. I found this out after accidentally getting burn marks on a very expensive stainless steel pot that did not belong to me, and I honestly didn't think it would work until I tried it myself. I've heard that if you have burn marks on the underside of a pot/pan, you can place it inside a wider pan with the water and baking soda, though I haven't tried this.

Although the term SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is probably thrown around a lot, I have noticed a pattern where I feel so sleepy and lazy and miserable and many other things during the colder seasons. I've been recently trying out a few things to not let it affect me so much, although I haven't tried everything out for the middle of winter yet.

  • -Having a comfortably lit room has been very helpful for me. I feel kind of silly for not considering this sooner because I would always have one dark corner of my room since my lamp is small, and I hate my overhead lights. A lot of (overpriced) "sunlight lamps" are out there online, but I just use a desk lamp that I was planning on getting rid of.
  • -Taking vitamin D supplements is probably important, although I'm not consistent or observant enough to feel a noticeable difference.
  • -To make up for the time that I'm not active outside, I (sort of) have a routine for exercising. Which is probably something I should have year-round anyway. Even just stretching for a little bit can help with getting and staying out of bed.
  • -This is a specific scenario, but my supervisor at work offered that I could do 8-4s instead of 9-5s for the upcoming winter so that I wouldn't have to drive home in the dark. I know that not every job would have this sort of accommodation, but it helps to at least ask!

  • Without going into too much detail, I accidentally got a minor fingernail infection over the summer, presumably from taking care of a few sick animals and not washing my hands as thoroughly/often as I should have. I considered going to a clinic, but I found online that ichthammol ointment can help treat paronychia, so I bought some from my local grocery store. I promise I'm not exaggerating when I say that I saw Instant Results because the swelling had noticeably gone down by the end of the day, and I didn't have an infection anymore after 2-3 days. Just when I started feeling silly for buying a whole tube of ointment for just one temporary issue, I found out that it works great with other skin irritations too— especially bug bites!
